Nowadays, networking is the most common, useful and effective tool we all have access to and also need to, in order to build our business, meet new people, find a job or for any of the other endless opportunities  or benefits you can get during networking time. But what does networking mean?

Networking is not only an exchange of business cards at an event, talking only about yourself and your need to find a job or customers for your business; it is more than that.

“Networking is defined as the exchange of information and cultivation of productive relationship for purposes beyond the reason for the initial contact”

One of the most common way to do networking is during a conference, where you can meet people who have interests in similar areas than you.

However, the ability to network is a skill that not everybody has. But there are a lot of tips that even the most introverted person can learn in order to master the skill of networking.

Let’s use the Five Ws and one H (or 6Ws) tool to talk about this topic.

WHO can do it? EVERYONE. Someone in the world is talking about the same topic like you. Go find those people and meet them in person/online. Some people are naturally more outgoing and popular, but social skills are learned, and they can be learned and improved at any time in our lives.

WHAT is networking? it is THE TOOL nowadays can help you accomplish that goal you have in mind (find your next job, develop your next idea, get funding, you name it!)

WHY to do it? Human beings are social creatures; we need social networks to survive and thrive; even the most independent, self-sufficient person need to connect with others.

WHEN to do it? ALWAYS! ANY TIME! Even if you have a dream job or your company is the most successful one! Maintaining your network alive is a smart step on your professional growth.

WHERE to do it? EVERYWHERE! There are specifics events like conferences, meetings, or just networking events; but even in the supermarket or an airplane you can/have to network.. you never know who is seating next to you!

HOW to do it? I found this infographic with really useful tips for networking at any event.

So, set your calendar for the next meeting, wear a smile and go NETWORKING!
