In his new blog post, ASQ CEO Paul Borawski, talk about the Annual QP Salary Survey that took place this month.

In a brief summary, the results showed that “…This year, for the first time since QP began its annual salary survey, the most important indicator—average salary—has become frustratingly stuck in place… Today’s quality professionals may want to seek strategies to stand out and make their individual stories different from others.

In order to “stand out“, there are several factors that affect the salary, and we as employees have the opportunity to control some of them.

The two more highly controllable factors are Education Level and Certifications/Training that closely matched to one’s job title. The good news is that the salary survey has reflected once again that “any ASQ certification is associated with a higher salary, but salaries are higher for those who hold more than one certification.

And here is where I want to focus my discussion today: the benefits of getting certified.

Before all else, I would like you to take at look a document from ASQ when you can learn the differences between Certifications and Training certificate; this is an important point to understand and have it clear like crystal ball. Read here.

I’ve clustered the benefits of getting a certification as follow:

1. Personal satisfaction: once you commit to get a certification and then accomplish that goal, it gets you to a point of extreme satisfaction, allowing you:

   – to have an increased self-confidence
   – to feel more comfortable in your position knowing the best practices to perform your job;
   – to be highly motivated to be and work better.
If you are a person like me that love challenges, taking a certification is the most powerful food for your hungry mind. And let me tell you that passing the exam it is a massive moral booster.

2. Professional recognition: become certified will:
   – increase your value as professional, you can be assured that new employers will take you seriously;
   – validate a proficiency within, and comprehension of, a specific body of knowledge (BoK);
   – help you to demonstrate to your boss, coworkers, customers, competitors, etc, that you have knowledge and use the best industry-respected practices, and that you have the ability to provide positive business results (smart companies will motivate and retain this type of talents).

3. Professional opportunities: having a certification will open up new doors. It will help you to get more opportunities in the job market because of the advantage you have over your competition.

4. Increased salary / Career advancement: even when this benefit depends on the company you work for, having a certification it will help you to required an increase in your salary and possibly, a career advancement to a better position.

5. Continuous improvement / Keep you updated: The process of achieving and maintaining the certification will ensure that you are:

   continually improving and polishing your knowledge;
   validating your experiences;
   – keeping yourself updated with ever-changing tool / technology / model used nowadays in the industry.Of course, obtaining certifications isn’t easy; you have to prepare yourself, using time to study and investigate (maybe after work?) in order to stand out of the crowd in this competitive job market.  But it always will bring good times, and do not forget that getting a certification is not a wasting time, it is invested time in your future!
